I traveled to Santa Barbara, California, for a project with Achok Majak. In our previous conversations, I knew it would be special, but I didn’t expect the project to take on such vast dimensions and for such magical people to come together, making it a moment I’ll never forget. As you’ll see in the coming days, Achok’s mother unexpectedly became an essential part of a project where love, home, family and roots finally emerged as protagonists, gradually revealing its essence.

Achok hails from Santa Barbara and has returned there after a period of constant movement in the fast-paced world of fashion. When she thinks of Santa Barbara, the first thing that comes to her mind is community. This city holds a special place in her heart, symbolizing the beginning of her journey.

Achok decided to leave New York after her success as a model, to return to her homeland, Santa Barbara, and reconnect with her family and friends, reshaping her life from a new perspective. I named this project Akor after meeting Awiit, Achok's mother. In Sudanese, "Akor" means "strong bond" - a deep connection, understanding, and commitment: to her way of life, her roots, her land, and her family… In Sudanese culture, family ties are highly valued, so "akor”. for me, it represents the inspiring connection that I was able to witness between a mother and her daughter, between Achok and Awiit.
